PCAB Announces New Labeling Requirements For
All PCAB Accredited™ Compounding Pharmacies

PCAB has announced new requirements for the labeling of compounded prescriptions. In the past a few patients, prescribers and members of the public have expressed concern that patients and prescribers sometimes receive compounded medication without being advised that the prescription has been compounded. PCAB Standards and Principles have always required proper notification to patients and prescribers. However, the PCAB Board of Directors voted to make its Standards even stronger in this regard and announced new required notice labeling as part of the PCAB Standards. While not technically a change in Standards, the new requirements mandate a more definite statement as part of Standards 8.10 and 8.20.

When dispensing compounded medications, compounding pharmacists have a responsibility to see that their patients know what they are taking; how to take it; and basic safety information about their medicines. Proper and consistent labeling of compounded medicines is an important tool in providing patients with this essential information. PCAB requires that PCAB Accredited™ compounding pharmacies adopt the new labeling system for compounded medications.
